GMC is working with media houses in Zimbabwe in having gender sensitive editorial and administrative policies and practices. We found it critical to ensure buy-in from key stakeholders as well as help towards establishing standards and guidelines for policies. To date, we have been working with mainstream media houses in formulating situational analyses for the respective participating media houses where they affirmed existing gender disparities in the Zimbabwean media. All sampled media houses showed a huge imbalance between male and female employees in the media. Of all 1266 employees of the four media houses, 933 were men and 333 female. This is despite the fact that all media claimed they have an equal opportunities hiring policies.
